I'm a third-year PhD student in the Social Futures Lab, co-advised by Amy Zhang and Jeff Heer. My work asks how computational tools can support the values of creatives and collective forms of making, especially to empower creatives to creat their own tools and control their data. I'm especially interested in pushing back against restrictions on the idea of who is allowed to create and shared their work, working with various technologies (spreadsheets, random procedures,..) as substrates for poetic computation. My approach to my research is rooted in my artistic practice, and ultimately very playful. I build experimental AI systems and creative coding tools, run collaborative workshops, and create public installations to ask how people actively negotiate authorship, self-perception, and collaboration within computational systems. My research extends outside of the academic context, and I'm always open to collabarations across a variety of approaches :)

In Progress

Works in progress and percolating thoughts. Feel free to reach out if you wish to discuss/collaborate!

  • Personal datasets and hyper-specific, small models built for singular creative communities
  • Governance structures for creative AI systems developed by and for writers
  • Making creative process visible: tools that document, reveal, and extend how artists work
  • Digital decay, impermanence, and software/data that changes over time
  • Small, slow, intentional software designed for care rather than scale

Protosampling: Enabling Free-Form Convergence of Sampling and Prototyping through Canvas-Driven Visual AI Generation

CHI 2026 · Alicia Guo, David Ledo, George Fitzmaurice, Fraser Anderson

Protosampling introduces a canvas-based AI system that collapses sampling and prototyping into a single spatial practice, allowing creators to collect, generate, remix, and trace visual ideas within one evolving workspace.

From Pen to Prompt: How Creative Writers Integrate AI into their Writing Practice

Creativity & Cognition 2025 · Alicia Guo, Shreya Sathyanarayanan, Leijie Wang, Jeffrey Heer, Amy Zhang

An interview and observation study of creative writers who work with language models, revealing how authors actively negotiate voice, ownership, and creative values rather than simply delegating writing to AI.

Previous life

  • Finished my MEng thesis with the Fluid Interfaces lab at the MIT Media lab on effects of biases in brainstorming with AI chatbots.
  • Spent a summer at ETH Zürich working with Dr. Christian Holz on emotion perception in VR.
  • Prototyped interfaces for creating non-digital animations with polarizers in the HCIE lab.
  • Created a dataset to measure gender bias in language generation with the Data to AI Lab.
  • Explored human ability to detect deepfakes with the Affective Computing group.

Sustained
A chrome extension that guides you through the online shopping process focusing on [sustain]able [ed]ucation, asking you the questions needed to help you make a thoughtful and more sustainable purchase with checkout reminders. Try it out here!

Polanimations
Interface prototype for using polarizers as a passive display technology to create animations. With Ticha Sethapakdi.

Detect Fakes
I researched in the MIT Media Lab working on conceptualizing and designing experiments to determine how well humans could detect deepfakes in comparison to the leading AI. Can you detect the deepfake?

Visual Poetry
Ever wondered what imagery or emotion poetry can evoke? Visual Poetry generates images from poetic text and applies style transfer from paintings of your chosen sentiment. Made with Peitong Chen and Olivia Seow.

Jello Collisions
Modeled soft-body (jello) collisions using a mass-spring system in C++. Watch the jiggles.

Impressions
Impressionist non-photorealistic renderings of paintings made in C++. I mimic the process of painting by splatting brush strokes along image gradients.
